Artist Statement

“My artistic background consists primarily of illustration-based artwork. I am able to incorporate this into my current textile practice through pattern design and mark-making on cloth. I aspire to continue a tradition of Black textile design inspired by both natural and built patterns in my immediate environment; a call and response to my physical condition and surroundings. By compressing my environment, I hope to invite slowness back into my reality and create records of public-mark making such as graffiti.

Recently, this has been expressed through silkscreening and I hope to adopt traditional block printing in the near future. In my shift towards surface design, my garment work has also been shifting to accommodate the original shape of the cloth over Western tailored fits.”
